Frequently asked questions

Costs & fees

How much does a hip replacement cost in China compared to the US?

Use our free estimator for typical price ranges at 3A hospitals in China; the source-linked cost data on the same page compares published China and US prices. You receive an itemized written quote from the hospital.

How much is IVF in China for foreign patients?

Our free estimator shows typical self-pay ranges at top-tier hospitals. Your exact quote comes to you directly from the hospital. Eligibility rules apply (for example, marriage documents) — the hospital checks eligibility before you travel. Tell us your situation for a free, no-obligation case review.

Who do I pay?

The hospital — directly, for your treatment: an itemized written quote from the hospital. The booking platforms — your case manager sends you links for hotels, flights and transport; you book and pay directly. Care Compass — one coordination fee, quoted for your case and disclosed in writing before you engage.

Is treatment covered by insurance?

All treatment is self-pay at Chinese hospital rates. The source-linked examples show these are often lower than US self-pay prices; the hospital sets your actual price. The hospital provides an itemized invoice you can submit to your insurer for possible out-of-network reimbursement; we provide a separate invoice for our coordination fee.

Do you mark up hospital prices?

The hospital sets and bills its own charges — its quote comes to you directly, unchanged. Our coordination fee is separate and set out in your written fee agreement.

How much is the coordination fee?

It depends on your treatment and the coordination you need. Your written fee agreement explains how it is worked out and when it is settled — you receive it before you engage or pay anything. Questions or a dispute: care@carecompasschina.com — we aim to reply personally within 48 hours.

What if plans change?

If the hospital cancels or reschedules, what happens to our coordination fee is set out in your written fee agreement. Hospital and travel bookings follow the hospital's and the providers' own refund rules. Questions or a dispute: care@carecompasschina.com — we aim to reply personally within 48 hours.

Process

How long is the wait for surgery in China compared to the NHS?

It's a different model: for Companion clients, we aim to arrange your first specialist appointment within 48 hours of arrival, subject to specialist availability, the hospital's arrangements and enough notice before you travel; the hospital sets your treatment plan and surgery date after that appointment — rather than joining a waiting list.

How can I get CAR-T cell therapy in China as an international patient?

CAR-T is among the advanced services available at leading 3A hospitals. Share your diagnosis summary through our contact form (no records needed) and we can ask a hospital whether it would consider your case; the hospital decides eligibility and gives any treatment plan or price after its own assessment. We provide coordination, not medical advice.

How long does the whole process take?

We aim to reply personally within 48 hours of your submitting the form. For Companion clients: once you tell us the treatment you need and your travel dates, we pre-arrange your hospital appointment — we aim to arrange your first specialist appointment within 48 hours of arrival, subject to specialist availability, the hospital's arrangements and enough notice before you travel (exceptional cases flagged in advance). Your treatment plan, costs, and any surgery date are set by the hospital after that appointment.

How can you line up the right specialist without seeing my records first?

Matching is based on the treatment you're seeking and your diagnosis summary. The hospital's team reviews your records at your appointment and decides what is appropriate; if the hospital raises a concern before you travel, we pass it on straight away.

Travel & visas

Do I need a medical visa for China, or can I enter visa-free for treatment?

Many nationalities can now enter China without a visa for short stays; the list and the allowed purposes change — check your nationality on the official sites below. China also offers a 240-hour visa-free transit scheme for eligible travelers passing through to a third country. For longer treatment stays, the embassy or visa centre tells you which visa applies (often the S2 medical visa) and which documents you need. See the Visas and documents section on our How it works page.

When can I fly after surgery?

Your treating hospital assesses whether you're cleared to fly before departure and how long to wait before flying home. Your own doctor can advise on any precautions for the flight home.

Practical

What about language barriers?

A bilingual case manager coordinates your hospital appointments, registration and treatment-related communication — in person on agreed days, by phone or message otherwise.

Can you accommodate halal or other dietary needs?

Tell us your dietary needs (halal, kosher, vegetarian or other) — we pass them to the hospital and help you check what meals are available before you travel.

Do I need to send you my medical records?

No — just tell us what treatment you're seeking. Bring your records and imaging with you to China (digital format is ideal); the hospital reviews them at your appointment. We never ask you to upload medical records.
